Graham D. Dean is the author of several short stories about wildlife, and many articles for The Good Parent's Guide to Shropshire. He has had poetry published in the UK and in the USA, including a prize winner in the Arvon Foundation Poetry Competition, when the judges were Ted Hughes and Seamus Heaney.

He has looked after geese, ducks, chickens, and he's cared for hundreds of injured wild birds until they were fit enough to be returned to the countryside. He is a retired gardener, and lives in Shropshire where he divides his time between eight grandchildren, writing, walking, conservation and animal welfare. Another novel for children and adults about pigeon racing from the bird's point of view is on the way. And then there'll be the sandmartin story.

This is a seriously funny adult children's book. Animal rights - particularly those of battery hens - are at the core of the story. But there is great adventure, and a romance that ends up in a Christmas happy ending. There are some unforgettable characters - 'Mad Annie', 'Strutabout', Mrs George, Linney and Mavis. And there are great jokes, and some wicked, pertinent humour (eg 'as rare as a hen's tooth').
